There are times where I worry that I’m basically a small child trapped in the body of a responsible grown-up. Take, for example, my love for the A4’s graduated rear indicators.

As part of the £1050 LED package, they’re too pricey to be considered by nearly all buyers, but as our car was an early model from Audi’s A4 launch programme, we didn’t get a chance to specify it ourselves and ended up with a car equipped with a lot of items designed to showcase its varied talents.

Basically, the rear indicator bar pulses across, rather than just lighting up in one motion (see images above). It’s distinctive, if a little pointless, but I like it.

The main thrust of the £1050 isn’t actually the show-off indicators at all, but the addition of LED front lights that are also part of the same option.

To be honest, although the illumination is really quite good (and I have a degree of unlit cross-country driving punctuated by deer and other wildlife so appreciate decent lighting), I’ve not looked at the A4’s beam and thought it could be worth in excess of a thousand pounds more than the regular A4 headlamps.
