What’s new: Much like sister brand Audi has done with the A4 and A6 Allroad models, Volkswagen has introduced a version of the Passat that’s more capable off-road than the standard car, with features including a 30mm increase in ride height and four-wheel drive.
Excellent: There’s some good additional off-road kit on the Alltrack, including the 4Motion system that can send power to the wheels with the best traction.
Good: The excellent DSG gearbox includes a function that alters the shift characteristics in off-road mode, providing more control and stopping the gearbox from manually changing up. VW‘s interior quality is also present and correct in the Alltrack.
Average: At a shade over £30,000, the Alltrack is pricey, and probably not worth the step up if you’re not going to be making use of the enhanced off-road ability.
Poor: There is a price to pay in emissions terms, with the 170hp 2.0 diesel emitting an extra 13g/km in Alltrack form over a conventional Passat Estate.
Verdict: Useful extra ability for bumpy and muddy ground will appeal to some, but if it’s not needed then there are more cost-effective Passat models.
