What’s new
VW have given its retro-tastic Beetle a light makeover. All engines are carried over unchanged.
Excellent
Not quite the word to describe what is basically a spin-off from VW’s last Golf, but saying that, its lines are far from bland and it will stand out in a car park full of dull hatches.
Good
VW claims the 2006 Beetle has boosted quality and we agree, expensive-looking plastics adorn the cabin, although the switchgear looks dated. On the plus side, the Beetle averages a combined 51.4mpg.
Average
The Beetle is not quick, strolling leisurely to 60 in just under 12 seconds.
Poor
You won’t be buying a Beetle for its practicality. The boot is abysmal and rear seats a joke.
Verdict
Only fans should and will apply, the Beetle needs a lot more than a facelift. Underpinnings based on the current Golf, rather than the old one, would be a good place to start.
