Less than a month passes and we’re already behind the wheel of a second new member of Volkswagen Bluemotion brigade – not that you can tell.

In our April Test Drive the little Polo stole the environmental headlines boasting hybrid-beating emissions and economy, a low 102g/km and stunning 72.4mpg. But there were compromises. Opting for the least polluting version stripped the interior of aircon and electric windows, and then there was the noise – a cacophony of diesel dirge intruded at all but motorway speeds. The Polo Bluemotion had clearly been compromised for its environmental goal and for some it may be a step too far.

Not so the Passat Bluemotion. Available in saloon and estate, it’s the same principle, different philosophy. From day one the Passat was created with fleet in mind, so adding the Bluemotion has seen VW continue to take a business approach.
