Thanks to a 4×4 system that only shuffles torque when it detects slip, most of the time it trundles around in front-wheel drive. A combined 44.1mpg is the reward, while the low 173g/km with a 24% BIK is only matched by the Honda CR-V 4×4.

On anything other than the really slippy stuff you’ll struggle to feel the 4×4 benefit. Only less of a tendency to spin wheels from standing is a clue, while generally there’s the feeling you’re dragging along significant more mass than the current 4×4. The added weight means performance suffers, with the 0-60mph sprint taking 10.2secs.

The handling is fine, and the ride, even with stiff springs, did an admirable job of soaking up the worst of the potholes, but overall we still prefer the Subaru competition the Legacy Outback for its greater balance and agility thanks to full-time four-wheel drive.

Only a thousand Scouts will be sold in its first full year. More than 85% will be diesel and pricing will be £1000 more than the regular 4×4, with almost £1500 worth of free spec thrown in.
