The Cupra is as fast and as fun as Seat’s long-standing Ibiza supermini gets. It’s only available with the three-door SC version and produces 180hp, rendering it good for a lively 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds and 142mph flat out.

Power comes from a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine, which is small enough to create respectable official economy of 47.9mpg and 139g/km. In reality, that all means it’s an entertaining, sprightly and fizzy little thing. The Spanish manufacturer’s styling is sharp, as always, and Volkswagen Group build quality is always something to rely on.

At £18,585 and 51.2ppm, though, the Cupra looks a bit steep. Bear in mind that the sublime Ford Fiesta ST can be had for £17,815 (that’s in top ST2 specification – the ST1 is cheaper still) and hits 49.2ppm, and the Ibiza starts to look a little pricey and outclassed.
