There are a couple of items that belie the Volvo V40’s compact proportions, the first of which is the glovebox: it’s massive and you can fit seemingly no end of clutter inside, which is rather handy when you spend the amount of time on the road that I seem to at the moment.

The second is the colossal panoramic glass roof, which is a £1000 optional extra. Even on the overcast days we’re used to at the moment, it lets a tremendous amount of extra light into the cabin and is a consistent hit with passengers.
