As an advocate of plug-in hybrids, I often get into spirited debates with those less keen on them.

But explaining just where the GTE sits among VW’s Golf line-up is tricky. Pricing-wise it’s up with the GTD and GTi diesel and petrol models, but in performance terms, and to some extent looks, it isn’t.

However, speccing up a regular petrol or diesel model to the level of the GTE, including the auto gearbox and styling enhancements, puts them within range of the plug-in model, and even more so when you factor in the GTE’s £2500 Government grant plus lower BIK, NI and fuel bills – the latter achieved only if you charge the car regularly, of course.
