I do a lot of motorway driving and the Seat’s five-speed gearbox seems at odds with what I expect from a lower medium car with a diesel engine that’s designed for absorbing miles.

It’s fine in terms of operation – in fact, it’s quite pleasant to use – but there are only five cogs.

You might think that would make it rev a bit too high on the motorway but it doesn’t even do that – around 2000 revs is standard fare at 70mph.

I am, though, aware of the lack of a sixth gear, and keep trying to engage sixth when there’s nothing higher up. It just feels as though it needs another gear.
