Exploring the full extent of the Avensis Tourer’s capability is mostly an enlightening experience.

It’s great at regular estate work – swallowing two massive speakers for a recent outdoor party with ease – while still having room to squeeze in the amp, lights, light stand, laser and the smoke machine (oh yes) that went with them.

Its upmarket everyday kit like electronic seat memory function makes every day an upmarket experience. My 5ft 3in wife uses her setting to get closer and higher to the steering wheel and presses the setting for my 6ft 1in frame to make it easier for her to exit the vehicle. which means when I get in, the seat’s just right. Perfect.

I’ve even managed to set up the stereo to copy any new CD I insert onto the car’s 10Gb music hard drive and made a playlist, for when my iPod is elsewhere. Editing or adding tracks is no problem, too, but despite much manual-bothering, actually learning how to play that list has so far eluded me, which is a shame. I’ve cancelled my application to be a contestant on the Krypton Factor meanwhile.
