I’ve found the 520d Touring’s size particularly useful in the early part of 2010.

Clearing out the garden before the snow arrived meant a run to the local recycling centre with bags of garden waste, which were easily accommodated in the 5-series.

The seats are simple to fold down flat, and you don’t need to push the front seats forward to do so. However, if you do push the seats forward, you can fit in a standard door (if you’re about to have building work done, for instance).

There is another reason the 520d keeps being favourite for the ‘please can I borrow’ list, and that’s down to the car’s looks, thanks in part to the M-sport bodykit. The ring headlights, visible when you unlock the car at night, are quite possibly the coolest around and still beat the latest daytime running light strips being hastily added to lots of rival vehicles.
