Now the 520d’s passed 3000 miles, we’ve had our first go at an economy fuel consumption figure.

The 520d Touring is an automatic and, like many autos is slightly less efficient for the claimed combined fuel figure than its manual-gearboxed counterpart. At 48.7mpg it’s down 8% on the manual.

Surprisingly, we achieved the official figure over a mix of cross-country and motorway driving. And while we did turn off the aircon, we didn’t go crazy and turn off any of the other electrical niceties such as satnav, day-running lights and auto wipers. We even used the heated seats.

The question now is, how long we can keep up this eco-driving?
