Tow balls may not be the most fascinating subject, but bear with me – the Kadjar’s tow ball is more interesting than you might think. Really, I promise.

This extra has been fitted to our test car as part of the Explore Pack. For £795, you get a tow ball-mounted double bike rack and a retractable tow ball, which is unusual on a crossover and more typically found on big, upmarket 4x4s. Instead of a fixed ball, which looks ugly and risks bruised shins, or a detachable one, which has to be stored somewhere when you don’t need it, the retractable ball is tucked out of sight when it’s not needed. So, the Kadjar’s good looks are preserved until you need to tow something.

I have yet to do any towing, but I have made use of the second part of the Explore Pack; the tow ball-mounted double bike rack. This adds £205 to the cost of a tow ball on its own, but a quick online search suggests this high-quality Thule rack usually sells for around £250 on its own, even after discounting, so to get this rack for only a fraction more than £200 is a good deal.

The rack proved easy to fit, and it held my bike securely when I took it in for a service a few days ago.
