A couple of round trips from Surrey to Canterbury in Kent have stretched the Renault’s legs, and reminded me that this is a comfortable car for motorway journeys.

Acceleration may be fairly steady, but the 1.5-litre diesel is quiet and I find the driving position very easy on my creaking back.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, though, I’m still waiting for fuel economy to improve. Despite the official combined figure of 72.4mpg, the Renault consistently returns low mpg in the high 40s (see picture) or low 50s. While that’s a long way off what I’d hoped for, it still means around 600 miles between fill-ups.
