As bugbears go, the inability of some carmaker satnavs to accept a full UK postcode is right up there.
The infuriation with the Peugeot‘s satnav started when I tried to find the Millbrook test track via postcode alone (it’s a place without an obvious street name and is not really a ‘point of interest’). Although I could only input five characters – that’s how many numbers are in a French postcode – I thought I’d get somewhere near, and having been before some years ago I set off with confidence. Hours later and seven miles off course in the heart of Bedford town centre I knew I had far from “arrived at my destination”.
On my return journey I thought I’d test this vagueness by inputting my London ‘SE’ postcode destination – some six miles south of the river – without the street name. But the satnav suggested a destination on the Embankment north of the river that doesn’t even share the same first two postcode letters, let alone the first five.
Fortunately, Peugeot UK is aware of the problem and has requested a solution from the French head office, but nothing is said to be in the pipeline.
