A couple of reports ago, I mentioned that the tray underneath the engine of the Mitsubishi Outlander had come loose. This was due to a vent in the tray that, most likely, caught a stone on a track that leads to some stables my daughter uses to house her pony.

When this happened, my local dealer, CCR Mitsubishi in Chertsey, said the tray, which was made of plastic-coated cardboard and had a vent in it, was an aerodynamic aid and not a protective cover.

The service advisor also said that the part wasn’t covered by warranty. Given I use the track to the stables on a weekly basis so the same thing was likely to happen again, I therefore opted to only pay once and replace the tray when the car was defleeted. The dealer said this would be fine.

However, when Mitsubishi’s head office technical team heard about my decision, they corrected the dealer to say that the tray was a protective item to stop water ingress.

So, £137 and a speedy while-you-wait service from CCR later, a new tray is on and protecting against water ingress into the car’s electrical systems – which as the Mitsubishi Outlander is a plug-in-hybrid – are somewhat vital.
