A roof box seems to suit the Countryman’s adventurous leanings and has proved a boon not just on summer holidays, but also more recently as a place to house big bags when up to three kids’ bikes are in the boot. Totting up recent mpg figures shows economy has tangibly suffered since the box went on – from a 47.2mpg high to early 40s afterwards. Although part of that change can be accounted for by more urban journeys, all that extra wind-blocking height and bulk won’t have helped. So it’s probably time to take it off – and its crossbars – and see if mpg improves.
