Just before our otherwise faultless ix35 had its rogue instrument panel module replaced, the erratic fuel gauge insisted on displaying full, regardless of how much diesel was in the tank. When it left, the computer registered a range of 260 miles, less than half a tank’s worth, a potentially troublesome mismatch.

Meanwhile, old-fashioned calculations show objectively that after 2600 miles the 1.7-litre engine is generating improved consumption – 49 mpg over the most recent 300 miles – and nudging our average up to 46.5mpg. Subjectively, the crossover feels smoother and more responsive as the miles mount up.
