Nissan has slotted a new 163hp turbocharged 1.6 petrol motor under the bonnet of the Qashqai, creating a nippy but relatively frugal model, courtesy of 138g/km CO2 emissions and 47.1mpg economy.

Excellent

The petrol engine pulls strongly from low speeds. Refinement levels are good as well, with much less noise and vibration than diesel equivalents. Comfort levels are also high, while roadholding is strong. We recorded impressive 45mpg-plus economy too.

Good

Despite its raised ride height and boxy 4×4 styling, the Qashqai remains easy to drive, providing a good view of the road ahead. The interior is clearly laid out and feels built to last. Space in both rows of seats is good, with only the middle rear seat feeling cramped.

Average

The boot is reasonably sized, with extra underfloor storage space. Running costs are acceptable, although mediocre residual values make the Qashqai nearly 3p per mile more than an equivalent Mazda CX-5.

Poor

While it’s very well equipped, the Qashqai doesn’t feel as plush inside as the CX-5 or German rivals, such as the Audi Q3, which undercut it for whole-life costs. The petrol motor could also be a little smoother.
