As the most modern and least van-looking light commercial, Mitsubishi’s Outlander offers something different to businesses needing to lug loads but not necessarily needing a hardcore LCV.

The Outlander is spun off its passenger car sibling, and the off-roader is therefore better to drive, better looking and with a nicer interior than most of its rivals. It also benefits from the same split rear tailgate that leaves a handy shelf for sliding in heavy loads. The Outlander’s rear passenger doors also open to help access the load bed.

The vehicle’s biggest criticism at launch was the lack of performance and particularly refinement from the VW-sourced 140PS 2.0-litre diesel, but this is less of a concern in a vehicle designed for work use. The £17,025 plus VAT price tag offers climate control, two airbags, electric windows and folding mirrors and CD player.

Mitsubishi’s latest commercial vehicle joins the Shogun and L200 in a stable of Mitsubishi’s workhosrses capable on-and off-road. It works out at 20.3p per mile, which compares very favourably with the Kia Sorento van thanks to the Outlander’s significantly better depreciation.

Verdict: Handy on- and off-road, the Outlander is a useful medium-strength commercial vehicle
