What’s new: The biggest car in the Mercedes-Benz range has arrived in the UK. The massive seven-seat GL is available in 3.0- or 4.0-litre form – we’ve driven the smaller of the two.

Excellent: The interior is typically Mercedes. The recent models are back on track after the company suffered a build quality wobble, and the space for seven adults is impressive.

Good: Although it’s not quick, the entry-level engine option is more than adequate in hauling this mass of metal. The fuel tank’ huge, too – we managed to fit in 100 litres during a refill.

Average: In part thanks to its high £51,355 P11D, costs aren’t good compared to the admittedly cheaper Audi Q7, the major premium seven-seat rival. The seven-speed gearbox also isn’t the smoothest.

Poor: The size is a good for interior space, but it’s a major handicap when you’re trying to park or pick your way through heavy traffic.

Verdict: The ultimate family vehicle, as long as there’s something else on the drive for a trip to the shops.
