What’s new Mercedes has freshened the looks of its entire E-class product line-up, including its lowest-emitting model, the E300 hybrid, which offers 109g/km thanks to a combination of 2.1-litre diesel engine and 20hp electric motor.

Excellent
The emissions are by far the lowest in the sector, compared with the best BMW?5-series at 119g/km, and the best Audi A6 or Jaguar XF at 129g/km.

Good
The 109g/km is, with the facelift, now achieved with 17-inch alloys, whereas before the car came with standard 16-inch rims in order to hit that level, but could be upgraded to 17-inch as a no-cost option. Comfort and refinement is also excellent.

Average
The hybrid system’s batteries eat into 35 litres of boot space in this saloon version, taking it down to 505 litres, while it’s a 45 litre drop on the estate.

Poor
Price is a drawback - the E300 Hybrid costs around £3000 more than the similarly powerful BMW?525d, though the whole-life cost total is close thanks to the hybrid’s efficiency and therefore tax advantages.

Verdict:

The most efficient executive model by some distance, and comfort and refinement score well.
