Mercedes has given the CLS, its four-door rival to the BMW 6-series, a subtle facelift.

The most noticeable exterior change is to the new door mirrors, which are bigger and now incorporate repeaters for the indicators.

The interior has also been subtly improved. There’s a new three-spoke steering wheel and the latest version of Merc’s optional and pricey satnav system. However, the car doesn’t yet gain the new BMW iDrive-style controller, as seen in the new C-class.

The rest is as before: a usefully practical, sporty vehicle, with a CPM of 87.8p per mile, that errs on the side of grand tourer rather than race car. And, for business users, the big coupe is a sensible option with plenty of power and 37.2mpg fuel economy.

Verdict: Four doors means it has greater business appeal than rivals’ cars
