What’s new: Mercedes creates an unlikely prestige hot- hatch with a range topping turbocharged three-door A-class.

Excellent: Smooth and punchy 193PS 2.0-litre turbo lacks lag, pulling strongly from just 1800rpm. Effortless performance and overtaking power is available in almost any gear.

Good: Distinctive looks stand out from the crowd, while mpv-high driving position offers great visibility. The well-equipped cabin feels special and is well made.

Average: The A200’s thirst matches the Golf GTi (34.9mpg), but the baby Merc loses out on cost per mile – 37.0p against the VW’s 34.0p.

Poor: The ride is far too stiff for the UK. Putting the power down on anything less than smooth roads forces constant ESP intervention

Verdict: An upmarket alternative to the Golf GTi, but it’s too expensive, too firm and can’t really compete in terms of fun factor.
