Reviewing Kia‘s Ceed SW (estate to you and me) is a real head-over-heart affair.

The car makes lots of sense. The boot is large and the access high and wide. Its 57.6mpg fuel economy is impressive, only 128g/km of CO2 are emitted and the 115PS engine manages 0-62mph in 11.7secs.

A P11D of only £14,995 means even the cheap plastics are bearable, with a cost per mile figure of 36.5p.

But there are negatives. The unresponsive steering and twitchy-feeling back end affected confidence in corners; and the windscreen washers were infuriating, spraying after the wipers had scraped over the muck on the screen. These were minor matters, but enough to drive anyone mad in as little as a weekend.

Verdict: Not perfect, but head wins over heart – a lot of practicality for not much money.
