Citroen is under no illusions as to where the strengths of its new C4 lie. Rather than trying to take on the best-in-class from a driving and handling perspective, the French firm is aiming for those people that want a comfortable and well-equipped car. It’s also aiming for the style vote, although the looks are a little too anonymous.

This 2.0-litre 150hp diesel variant has a great engine, both powerful and refined, while emissions of 130g/km and economy of 56.5mpg also impress. The interior quality is impressive, too, bordering on plush, and the boot is huge, but that does come at the expense of a little rear legroom.

Citroen has succeeded in making the C4 a comfort-orientated car with good quality, and while that’s the sort of thing drivers learn to appreciate in time, it lacks a little sparkle or obvious appeal to attract in the first place.
