BMW‘s entry-level X1 small 4×4 is available with both rear- and four-wheel drive. The cleanest Efficient Dynamics version, tested here and BMW’s most efficient 4×4 to date, has the former (in addition to other tweaks) to save weight and fuel. The result is a 2.0-litre diesel X1 with 163hp, 119g/km and average economy of 62.8mpg – impressive figures for what is still a sizeable car. They’re made even more remarkable by a 0-62mph time of 8.3secs and the German firm’s trademark enjoyable handling.

The interior is typical of BMW – well built, refined and of good quality, if a little dour, while rear passenger space and the 420-litre boot are reasonable.

Those after a fully-fledged 4×4 for working use should look elsewhere, but anyone keen on the associated benefits of such a car as well as the BMW badge can now have all that with thoroughly impressive running costs.

Verdict As clean and economical
as a 4×4 gets but not a
