Audi‘s A1 has joined the ranks of the sub-100g/km club. Tweaks to the fuel system and engine management have cut emissions from 105g/km to 99g/km, and improved fuel economy from 70.6mpg to 74.3mpg.

Available in all three trim levels, including the hard-riding, range-topping S-line driven here, the revised A1 matches its arch-rival, the Mini hatchback, for efficiency and is £180 cheaper than the Cooper Soho. The A1 takes the cost per mile win though, thanks to a better residual value than the Mini, one of the first signs that the BMW-owned brand is starting to lose the RV invincibility that it’s enjoyed for so long.

The 1.6 diesel is powerful enough for Audi’s smallest model, certainly avoiding the impression of being a low-emission focused car, although the harsh ride of the S-line model in particular will be too much for some drivers.
