There’s a pleasing menace to the looks of the Corsa VXR, though it’s lead to a few ‘yoofs’ driving too close for comfort.

Optional 18-inch alloy wheels look the part and come with the Performance Package that also brings bigger brakes.

Also included with the Performance Pack is firmer suspension that spoils the ride comfort on most roads.

Holy moly, this thing is quick from point to point. The 1.6 turbo engine picks up quickly from low revs and pulls and pulls.

Brembo brakes are up to the Corsa VXR’s performance and slow the car very effectively. More pedal feel would be good, though.

While most of the VXR’s cabin is a little too close to a standard Corsa’s, the seats are superbly comfortable and supportive.

It’s a shame the seats don’t have a better position memory after accessing the decently roomy rear seats.

Still on those seats, the slide release button feels frail and likely to snap off.

So-so economy may be acceptable for a hot hatch, but it’s a chore stopping so often at petrol stations.

For all its rough edges, the Corsa VXR wheedles its way into your affections with its hard-charging nature.
