We love the space, but Al Suttie finds out if the Skoda Superb 1.6 TDI has the pace to match.
1 – 1.6-litre TDI engine has 120hp, which initially feels merely adequate in a car the size of the Skoda Superb.
2 – After a while, the relaxed nature of the 1.6 diesel works its way into our affections, matching the laid back style of the Superb’s drive.
3 – Impressive real-world 60.0mpg economy further endears the Superb, as does 108g/km. Greenline model offers even better 95g/km.
4 – On first acquaintance, the suspension feels wallowy, but again familiarity shows it’s well suited to the Skoda’s nature.
5 – It still handles well, with good control through corners that ably hides the size of the Superb.
6 – The Superb hatch is a subtly handsome beast that cloaks its considerable size very well, helped by £535 optional metallic paint.
7 – That size endows the Superb with its party piece of incredible cabin space. It really is limo-like in the back.
8 – The boot ain’t bad either and gulps up to 1760-litres with the back seats folded. If you need more, get a van.
9 – Electrically opening tailgate is a £400 option, but having to order the no-cost rear wiper seems odd when it should be standard.
10 – Fantastically clear dials are pleasing, but automatic electronic handbrake can release too early, letting the car roll backwards.
