Can this sportier take on the Megane appeal as much as the frugal diesel, wonders Al Suttie?
1 – Renaultsport has had a hand in the suspension set-up of this car and it shows in the fine handling balance.
2 – In any situation, the Megane GT Nav turns into corners and hangs on with life-depends-on-it determination.
3 – We’re not so convinced by the 4Control rear-wheel steer, but it doesn’t detract from the Megane’s fun drive on twisty roads.
4 – Another area that fails to win us over is the Multi-Sense range of chassis settings. Just give us one that works in all conditions please.
5 – Even so, the Megane rides well for a sporty hatch, though we’d like some more feel through the steering.
6 – Now, what about the engine? Borrowed from the Clio RS, it suffers the same curious lack of aural appeal.
7 – From rest to 62mph in 7.2 seconds is certainly not sniff-worthy, but the motor never feels as eager or fun as a VW Golf GTI’s.
8 – The seven-speed dual-clutch EDC transmission is a happy contributor to the GT Nav’s experience, shifting smoothly.
9 – We can forgive the gearbox the occasional dither before changing down a couple of gears as it suits the car overall.
10 – Does the GT Nav have what it takes to tempts us from the fleet-favourite version? Afraid not, so we’ll just have to wait for the full-bore RS.
