Honda dropped the price of the Civic Tourer last year. Better value, yes, but a good car ponders Al Suttie.

– Honda slashed as much as £1620 off the Civic in 2015. Cheaper to buy, then, but is it enough to tempt business users?

– With 99g/km and combined economy of 74.3mpg, the 1.6 diesel on test here certainly makes sense on paper.

– On the road, it’s also a sensible choice. Not exciting or that rapid, with 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds, but definitely a sound choice.

– Speaking of sound, the Honda diesel is pleasingly quiet when you’re in the cabin and it’s more than flexible enough in any gear.

– There’s some flexibility with the suspension too, thanks to the optional adaptive damping for the rear end.

– Comfort mode has most situations covered admirably, while Sport works ideally on those rare empty back road moments.

– We’re not convinced the back seats are quite as enticing as they’re short on knee room for older kids and adults.

– Still, the rear seat bases tip up to create a huge load space separate from the massive boot.

– Under the boot floor lurks another vast cargo space to keep valuable from prying eyes.

– The VW Golf wagon offers more capacity, but versatility is the key word with the Civic Tourer, and we like that.
