West Middlesex University Hospital has signed up to Alphabet’s electric vehicle consultancy service in a bid to cut costs and lower its carbon footprint.
The hospital has taken on a Nissan Leaf following advice from AlphaElectric due to taxi fares being a substantial part of employee travel expenses in 2013.
AlphaElectric estimates it will reduce costs for the hospital by 40%.
Therapy employees now use the electric pool car instead of taxis whenever possible, removing the need to administer fuel cards or garage receipts.
Andy Finlay, performance and operations manager at the Trust, said: “It’s a win-win for us on cost and the environment.
“The more we save on expenditure, the more we can put into front line services. The saving we make with the pool car could equate to half a nurse’s salary in the first year.”
Finlay said it was likely other NHS organisations will adopt EVs as pool cars in order to cut their grey fleet and expenses.
