A new diesel engine option has been added to Volkswagen’s T-Cross SUV range.

The 1.6-litre, 95hp engine is the first diesel to join the line-up, which consisted of two petrol engines at launch – 1.0-litre units with 95hp and 115hp respectively.

The new diesel engine is available with either five-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, and offers combined fuel economy of 52.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 140g/km.

It is capable of accelerating the T-Cross from 0-62mph in 11.9 seconds with the manual gearbox, and 12.5 seconds with the auto.

The new engine is available with the SE, SEL or R-Line equipment grades – only the entry-level S grade misses out.

Prices for the T-Cross with the new engine start at £21,240, for an SE grade car.
