The Vauxhall Astra has been named as the 2016 European Car of the Year at the Geneva motor show.

The Astra beat off competition from the Mazda MX-5 – which was voted as the UK Car of the Year – and the Volvo XC90 SUV.

The award is decided by 58 leading European motoring journalists, and this is the 52nd running of the competition.

“We’re delighted the Astra has been recognised for yet another award,” said Rory Harvey, Vauxhall’s chairman and managing director. “To be named European Car of the Year by judges throughout Europe is a testament to the hard work that has gone into the Astra.”
