Better charging points are expected to be the main future trend for electric motoring in the UK, according to a survey of drivers.
Charging firm NewMotion asked drivers what they thought would change for electric vehicle (EV) charging in the future.
In response, 76% predicted higher-performing and faster charging facilities, allowing them to get on the road more quickly and for longer periods of time.
More conveniently located charging points were predicted by 74% of those asked, while 65% thought there would be a shift towards a more sophisticated, connected user system.
The question formed part of a Europe-wide survey of EV drivers, which had nearly 7,000 respondents in total. The poll found that 62% of drivers had opted for pure EVs, while 30% had plug-in hybrids.
Of those surveyed, 31% did not own another vehicle other than their EV.
In terms of cost savings, 30% of respondents said they saved more than £800 a year by going electric.
According to the survey results, there is potential for growth through the workplace, with only 10% of respondents acquiring their EV through work, compared with 65% who bought privately.
In addition, only 10% charged their EV at work, compared with 65% at home and 27% in public places.
Lee Feihn, UK business developer for NewMotion, said: “The market of EV ownership is shifting dramatically. The government ban of petrol cars by 2040 has been a huge catalyst, with clear policies to support growth in electric vehicles.
“Alongside this, there’s the arrival of affordable EV cars, increased government subsidies and investment into infrastructure. We’re seeing a surge that will only grow in momentum throughout 2018.”
