BMW has announced details of its second generation 1-series line-up which goes on sale on 17 September with a choice of three diesel and two petrol engines.

Prices range from £19, 375 on-the-road for the entry level 116i 136hp, which has claimed mpg of 49.6 and CO2 emissions of 132g/km, to £23,480 OTR for the 120d 184hp with 62.8mpg and CO2 output of 119g/km.

At a later date BMW will supplement the line-up with a 116d Efficient dynamics model, which it claims will be the first production BMW to break the 100g/km emissions barrier with CO2 output of 99g/km and fuel consumption of 74.3mpg.

The engines on offer consist of two all new twinpower turbocharged petrol units and three revised diesel drivetrains.

The new 1 Series is 83mm longer, 14mm wider and has a 30mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor.

Rear seat passengers get 20mm extra legroom and luggage space has been increased by 30 litres to 360 litres.
