Scotland is set to lower its drink-drive limit from the UK-wide 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg later this year.

The move follows the Scottish government recently gaining power to independently control the limit.

It remains at 80mg for England and Wales, although the Scottish proposals match many countries in Europe including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Road safety charity Brake said: “It’s certainly a step in the right direction and one that we commend, and we would like to see the British Government also lowering the drink-drive limit.

“However, a 50mg limit does still leave some level of confusion for the general public about what is safe.”
