Peugeot has revealed the 208 Hybrid FE, a concept supermini emitting 49g/km but still able to go from 0-62mph in 8.0secs.

It has also developed a Hybrid Air version of the forthcoming 2008 crossover, expected on sale in 2016.

Alongside a conventional 1.2 petrol engine, the hybrid system adds a hydraulic motor driven by oil displaced by compressed air. Energy to compress the air is stored when the car decelerates or by diverting some energy from the petrol engine.

The hydraulic motor drives the rear wheels, while the petrol engine drives the front. Peugeot claims the system doesn’t detract from fuel tank or interior space and has the goal of achieving 140mpg.
