BYD has opened orders for the Seal U DM-I, its new large plug-in hybrid SUV.

The model is BYD’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle to be sold in Europe, and comes in a choice of two equipment grades, each with a different powertrain spec.

The Boost grade pairs a 98hp petrol engine with a 145kW electric motor, for a total system output of 218hp, driving the front wheels.

The Design grade features a 130hp petrol engine, with 150kW and 120kW electric motors on the front and rear axle respectively, delivering a total of 323hp, and all-wheel drive.

Both come with an 18.3kWh battery, which with the Boost version is said to allow an electric-only range of more than 49 miles on the WLTP combined cycle.

Standard equipment includes 19in alloy wheels, vegan leather upholstery, a 15.6in rotating touchscreen, a panoramic electric sliding sunroof, a head up display, wireless smartphone charging, and vehicle-to-load charging.

Prices start at £33,205 for Boost spec, and rise to £39,905 for Design spec.

The first cars are due to arrive in September.
