Volvo has revealed the concept version of its new BMW 3-series competitor the S60.

While revealed as a concept, the S60 seen here and due to be formally launched at the Detroit motor show, is understood to be close to production reality.

The S60 features a host of new safety and efficiency technology.

The concept is being shown with a 180PS turbocharged 1.6 petrol engine with emissions of 119g/km. This figure is possible thanks to a twin-clutch automatic gearbox, stop-start and a grille shutter that improved aerodynamics at speed.

On the safety front, Volvo is showing an improved clever cruise control that can bring the car to a stop if necessary. An uprated City Safe auto-brake function that stops collisions in heavy traffic is also installed.
