Vauxhall has introduced a new equipment grade for its Astra lower-medium car, which becomes the cheapest in the range.

The Astra Griffin – billed as a special edition by the manufacturer – is priced from £34,995 as an EV, and from £24,795 with a petrol engine, reducing the starting price for the line-ups by £2,800 and £2,775 respectively.

The EV features a 156hp motor and a 54kWh battery, allowing a range of up to 258 miles on the official WLTP cycle, while the petrol version offers 130hp from a 1.2-litre engine.

Available as a hatchback or Sports Tourer Estate, the Griffin grade – which follows on from the Corsa Yes Edition and Mokka Griffin – also offers extra equipment compared with the previously entry-level Design grade, including heated seats and steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, and a 180-degree reversing camera, as well as tinted rear windows, and roof rails on the Sports Tourer.

Other standard equipment includes a 10in touchscreen, with wireless Apple Carplay, and Android Auto, a 10in digital instrument cluster, LED lights, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, traffic and speed sign recognition, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Orders for the Astra Griffin are open now, with deliveries of EV versions due to begin later this month, and petrol deliveries following from November.
