Mercedes has revealed its new S600 Guard, joining the special protection range of vehicles that also covers
E-, M- and G-class models.
The S600 Guard is certified to German resistance class VR9, making it the first vehicle to achieve the grade. That means it is able to provide effective protection against terrorist attacks, resisting rifle fire from military weapons with twice the velocity of handgun bullets, as well as splinters from hand grenades or explosive charges.
The protected version is, according to Mercedes, barely distinguishable from a standard S-class saloon for reasons of discretion, and the car is powered by a 530hp V12 petrol engine, limited to 130hp for weight reasons.
Security features on top of the reinforced shell and polycarbonate-coated glass include run-flat tyres that Mercedes claims are good for 19 miles when damaged, reinforced suspension, and uprated brakes.
Optional extras include panic alarm system, fire extinguisher, and an emergency fresh-air system to protect occupants from smoke or gases
