Nissan has unveiled the new, fourth-generation version of its X-Trail SUV, set to arrive in Europe in summer 2022.

The new X-Trail will be available with the E-Power powertrain system previously announced for the smaller Qashqai SUV, which features a petrol engine used only to drive an onboard electricity generator, with an electric motor then supplying power to the wheels. Nissan claims this set-up means improved efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than with a traditional petrol engine, as the E-Power unit can always run within its optimal rev range.

The new X-Trail, like the outgoing model, will be available with a folding third row of seats, and with all-wheel drive - the latter system being configurable to suit driving on snow, gravel, or mud.

Prices and UK specs are yet to be announced.
