MG has announced full details of its first electric car, based on its ZS SUV.

Badged the ZS EV, it features a 143hp motor paired with a 44.5kWh battery pack, capable of delivering a driving range of 163 miles under the WLTP test cycle.

MG says that by positioning the battery under the car, it has not compromised cabin or storage space, and claims that a water-cooling system allows frequent rapid charging and optimum range whatever the weather.

Three driving modes are on offer, and three levels of regenerative braking.

There are two equipment grades available: Excite and Exclusive.

Standard driver assistance systems – including autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control – come as part of the MG Pilot package.

The cabin features an 8in colour touchscreen with sat-nav, Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming, and DAB radio.

Prices for the ZS EV – which comes with a seven-year warranty covering both the car and the battery pack – start at £28,495, not including the government’s £3,500 plug-in car grant, although a further discount is on offer to the first 1,000 retail customers.

The first deliveries are expected in September.
