The Liberal Democrats has accused the Government of making cars too cheap to run, following recently revealed Department for Transport statistics on transport costs.

Car travel costs have fallen 10% in the past 10 years compared to public transport as bus travel costs have jumped 13% since 1997 and train travel has risen by 6%.

The figures were revealed by Labour’s transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick following a parliamentary question on the matter tabled by LibDem transport spokesman Susan Kramer.

Speaking in last Wednesday’s The Independent newspaper, Kramer said: “When we are all concerned about climate change, Government strategy that increases the cost of public transport while motoring costs fall is outrageous.”
