Euro NCAP have published its latest safety results, with eleven vehicles having been tested with some surprises among the results.
BMW’s new electric i3 missed out on the full five-star score achieved by six of the 11 vehicles. Though it performed well for occupant protection, poor pedestrian protection along the bumper and windscreen sides meant that it missed out on five stars, earning four instead.
Similarly, while the Ford Ecosport small off-roader provided great occupant protection, poor pedestrian protection along the base of the windscreen and the lack of a speed limiter device meant the model was also only awarded four stars.
While the new Nissan Note supermini recorded good child occupant protection, the front seats provided only marginal protection against leg and whiplash injury. Additionally, much like the Ecosport, the Note demonstrated poor pedestrian protection along the base of the windscreen, garnering the model four stars.
However, the VW Transporter passenger variant fared the worst. In particular, poor pedestrian protection along the bumper was recorded, scoring no points in this area, while most of the bonnet surface provided protection that ranged between poor and marginal. Poor protection to the driver’s chest and legs, and the lack of a speed limitation device, meant the T5 only earned four stars.
The other vehicles tested, all new to the UK market, were the Ford Tourneo Connect, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Maserati Ghibli, Infiniti Q50, Mazda 3 and the Peugeot 308, all of which received the full five stars.
Also retested was the Mercedes Citan Kombi, the passenger version of the Citan light van, which managed to boost its score from three to four stars. However, Mercedes has no current plans to sell the model in the UK.
