Kwik-Fit Fleet has urged fleet bosses to save money by looking after the tyres on their company cars and vans.
The fast-fit giant reckons tyre replacement on a fleet vehicle over three years/60,000 miles typically accounts for a third of its maintenance budget.
Sales director Peter Lambert said: “If drivers are educated to look after their vehicle tyres in accordance with best practice and other straightforward advice is followed to keep costs in check then fleet operational budgets will not escalate out of control.”
Kwik-Fit Fleet advises drivers to check tyre pressures on a monthly basis as incorrectly inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by 10% and running tyres that are 20% under inflated can reduce a tyre’s life by 30%.
On the other hand, it said over inflated tyres increase wear on the tread and make tyres more susceptible to impact damage.
Kwik-Fit also pointed out that inflating tyres with nitrogen instead of air can make them last longer by decreasing pressure loss.
