Transport secretary Ruth Kelly will step down at the next cabinet reshuffle, rumoured to be due this week ahead of Parliament’s return from its summer break.

Kelly is standing down from the role to spend more time with her family, saying: “I now owe it to my children and family to take a step back and start putting them first.”

She took the position of transport secretary in July 2007 after Gordon Brown became Prime Minister. The 40-year-old MP for Bolton West announced her resignation at the recent Labour party conference.
