Staff at Imperial Tobacco’s Nottingham site have started an indefinite overtime ban following a dispute over the city’s workplace parking levy.

The dispute concerns claims by the GMB union that Imperial intends to pass on the annual £192 plus VAT charge to employees, as reported by BusinessCar on 1 May. However, the firm said it will only pass on £120, which would be tax-free for staff and equate to a net annual cost of around £80 per person, or £1.50 a week.

Imperial also stated that employees willing to participate in one voluntary day of training relevant to the business or a day’s work for a registered charity of their choice would be exempt.

GMB members at Imperial initially operated a one week work-to-rule, but as BusinessCar went to press, were due to start indefinite action from Monday 28 May after negotiations broke down.
